Advent Calendar – 16 December
In the first year of being a mum, particularly during those really tough early months, I was honestly absolutely shattered – physically and mentally. I couldn’t seem to help Little Bean sleep unless I was breastfeeding her until I was drained, or walking around the village for hours with her napping in the pram. To get me through those long walks, it was earphones in and hope that baby dozes off! That’s when I first found the Very Good Enough podcast – and it became a bit of a lifeline.
Very Good Enough is a wonderful podcast from the Very Good Mothers Club in the USA, and is hosted by Jess Hover and Layne Deyling Cherland. This podcast is exactly the kind of support I needed as a new mum. It’s practical, insightful, and doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of parenting. Jess and Layne are warm, honest, and relatable, and they provide advice that’s practical and grounded in real-life experiences.

What really helped me , especially in those early months, was how comforting it was to hear these two hosts just be real about the challenges of becoming a mother. They shared their struggles and gave advice in a way that felt honest—without trying to push unrealistic standards. It helped me realise that what I was doing, even if it wasn’t perfect, was more than enough. They made me feel less alone in what was a really isolating time.
The topics they cover, from sleep to discipline to identity to self-care, and balancing it all with the general business family life, felt so relevant. It wasn’t about being the “perfect parent” — it was about getting through it all and making the best of things, even when it was so tough. Their approach is reassuring and down-to-earth, and it really resonated with me as a new parent trying to find myself in my new role.
If you’re after something practical, insightful, and full of honest parent talk, I highly recommend giving Very Good Enough a listen. It’s one of those podcasts that made me feel like I was having a conversation with friends who just got it — especially when I needed it most.
